BURYING BAD NEWS FOR LABOUR

The CBI and the Institute of Directors are calling for swifter action on tackling the deficit than Labour is countenancing. They want action to begin this year. This is obviously a huge political story. Today's The Daily Politics certainly gave it its due. What about the BBC News website? Obviously, you would think, the story must feature on its home page. Well, no. There are plenty of stories on its home page but, surprise surprise, this isn't one of them. A Facebook predator and the Oscars are considered far more important stories. It is the second story on the Politics page (as of 15.45).

The story is obviously bad news for Labour and good news for the Conservatives. Is that why it is being buried? When twenty leading economists called for swifter action last month the BBC website played the story down but, a few days later, when sixty economists were marshaled to oppose this call, the BBC led its news home page with the story. The site is playing this story down now too.

How long will it even remain at No.2 on the Politics page before it vanishes?

Burying bad news isn't just something Labour does. It's something its allies at the BBC do, day after day.
