An ungracious report on the swearing in of the new centre-right president of Chile here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8561340.stm
*
After dwelling on the popularity of Mrs Bachelet, the outgoing centre-left president, the report spends much of what little space is left for the newly-elected president Mr Pinera pointing out how rich he is:
*
Paragraph 1: Chilean tycoon Sebastian Pinera is due to be sworn in as president of the country, which was recently devastated by a massive earthquake and tsunami.
*
Paragraph 9: "We won't be the government of the earthquake, we'll be the government of reconstruction," the 60-year-old billionaire said recently.
*
Paragraph 12: Mr Pinera is one of the country's richest men. He made his fortune introducing credit cards to Chile, then went on to buy a television channel, a stake in Chile's most successful football club, and millions of dollars in other investments.
*
Besides showing sour grapes on the BBC's part that a right-of-centre candidate had the cheek to get himself voted in by a Latin American electorate, I think the (anonymous) reporter here is trying to tell us something about Mr Pinera! And it doesn't seem to be that he's clearly a very gifted man.
Par for the course for the bbc.
ReplyDeleteInteresting on Feedback on radio 4 today with people complaining of the last QT and also on the left wing bias on the Ashcroft affair.
Ashcroft tied by bbc with Brown bullying to try to show balance, but Ashcroft went on and on for 5 days as we know.
Beeboid News Editor gave the usual beeboid left wing excuses, and the QT complaints of Dimbleby and the audience etc glossed over - but THE MESSAGE IS GETTING THROUGH.
