Looking closely at the BBC during the last nine months or so has taught me never to take on trust the 'independence' of their chosen experts.

Today's The World At One, for instance, considered the impact a Lib Dem surge might have on the result of the general election and talked to someone Martha Kearney introduced as "Lewis Baston, author of The Political Map of Britain". Despite introducing David Buik as a Conservative supporter the other day, Martha chose not to mention that Mr Baston has also been a member of the Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform.

On the same theme, over 3 1/2 minutes was given to another Labour member, Lord Adonis. This balanced Lord Ashdown, who got a similar amount of time on Today. Ann Widdecombe, on the other hand, got just 2 minutes to discuss how the Conservatives should respond to Nick Clegg.

Incidentally, a report from Ed Balls's constituency talked to all the candidates...from Labour to the BNP...except for the candidates of the Peoples National Democratic Party and UKIP.
