What a difference a week makes!
*
Last week Andrew Marr was hammering away at David Cameron, scoring a very high Interruption Coefficicient of 2.1 (as contrasted with a much smaller I.C. of 1.0 for Gordon Brown). Today is was the turn of Labour's Great White Hope, Alan Johnson.
*
The ever-pithy David Vance on the Biased-BBC website sums up the mood of this interview thus: "Andrew Marr virtually hugs Alan Johnson on his programme." The very mediocre I.C. of 0.6 backs this up.
*
If you didn't catch it, please watch the programme on the BBC i-Player & watch Andrew Marr's body language towards Mr Johnson. Then (presuming that you saw last week's programme) compare it with Marr's body language towards David Cameron. Last week Marr was highly mobile, thrusting his body forward and flinging his arms about, pulling faces and being, all in all, the very model of an aggressive interviewer. This week he was remarkably still, immobile even. His arms were kept well under control and his facial expressions were restrained. It was gentle behaviour for a gentle interview.
*
There were few abortive interruptions, no heckles and lots of assenting "mmm"s, "sure"s and noddings of the head, and a little friendly banter too.
