With Kirsty Wark, Gavin Esler is the most blatantly biased of the Newsnight presenters. His performance on last night's programme saw him act without restraint as a partisan for Tony Blair. He praised the former prime minister and defended him (alongside John Prescott, not pictured) against Eric Pickles and the ubiquitous Chris Huhne with a passion unbecoming of a supposedly impartial interviewer. He interrupted Eric Pickles relentlessly and, when Mr Huhne turned his always-withering fire on TB's business activities, turned on him too, calling his remarks 'outrageous'. Why on earth do the BBC keep featuring a third-rate has-been like John (not pictured) Prescott ?

Eric, whose office always replies courteously to my e-mails, has a wonderful way of conducting himself during interviews.
ReplyDeleteHis dry humour and willingness to point out when he is being over-interrupted are winning qualities but even they couldn't really him withstand the combined onslaught of a near-hysterical Esler and a rampaging bull-prescott (who, as Grant says, the BBC still can't get enough of, inexplicably).
Prescott is an effective communicator popular with a lot of voters.
